From: marmonk@eskimo.com (Mark Morden) Subject: Great Googalie Moogalie Organization: Eskimo North (206) For-Ever Date: Sat, 14 Jan 1995 15:48:37 GMTI have discovered another Zappa source. Check out Howlin' Wolf on "Going' Down Slow," (Chess single 1813). He has a line in there where he says, "And women? Great googalie moogalie!" I always assumed that GGM was something Zappa made up. There have been interviews where Frank gave his praise for some of the old Bluesmen like the Wolf and Elmore James. GGM must be his tribute to Howlin' Wolf.
PS 1-There is another version of Goin' Down Slow (live) where the Wolf sings "Great stars a'me" instead of GGM. Same rhythm, but not as memorable.
PS 2-The only other time I have heard GGM over the air waves was Seattle Sonics broadcaster Kevin Callabro. Last year Sam Perkins of the Sonics was on a 3-point binge. After hitting his sixth in the game, all Callabro could say (quite enthusiastically) was "Great googalie moogalie." Kinda of took his Color Man aback. Sort of a 'where the hell did that come from' reaction and response.
